Early Years Education Focused Inspections Briefing Paper - May 2015

The Inspectorate of the Department of Education and Skills (DES), at the request of the Department of Children and Youth Affairs (DCYA), is developing a model of inspection that focuses on the quality of educational provision in early years settings participating in the Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) scheme.
The Inspectorate plans to pilot Early Years Education-focused Inspections (EYEIs) in Autumn 2015 to complement other measures taken to support the ongoing improvement of quality in early education. The education-focused inspections will

  • explore the extent to which early years practitioners participating in the ECCE scheme are engaging with existing national frameworks: Aistear: the Early Childhood Curriculum Framework, and Síolta: the National Quality Framework for Early Childhood Education.
  • ascertain the nature, range and appropriateness of the early educational experiences for children who are participating in the ECCE scheme.
