Quality Supports – Environment Rating Scales

Dublin City Childcare Committee offer a range of quality supports to childcare providers across Dublin City.

We can now offer support in childcare services using:

The Infant Toddler Environment Rating Scale (ITERS-R)

The Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS-R)

The ITERS or ECERS support involves a maximum of two observers spending 3 hours observing a normal day in one room of your childcare service, using the relevant Environment Rating Scale. Afterwards, feedback will be provided, and further supports will be offered, if needed.

The Rating Scales are a set of tools for measuring and improving the quality of early year’s provision, and are designed to give a snapshot of provision on a particular day. The Rating Scales evaluate quality of provision for children aged between Birth – 2 ½ years (ITERS-R) and 2 ½ - 5 years (ECERS-R).

The Rating Scales broadly evaluate seven dimensions of quality:

• Space and furnishings
• Personal care routines
• Language and reasoning
• Activities
• Interactions
• Programme structure
• Provision for parents and staff
