Training & Qualifications

Having a formal qualification can give you the skills and confidence to work in a variety of childcare settings and can give you wider options in pursuing a career in the early years' sector.  Further training or education, in addition to working in the early years can also complement valuable experience and knowledge gained through working directly with children. As a result, formal training is an ever more important requirement for childcare practitioners.

In 2012 the Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn T.D. announced the formal establishment of Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI), the amalgamated qualifications and quality assurance authority.

QQI replaced the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland (NQAI), the Further Education and Training Awards Council of Ireland (FETAC), and the Higher Education Training and Awards Council (HETAC). It also took over functions of the Irish Universities Quality Board.

The new authority assumes all the functions of these four bodies. These include managing the National Framework of Qualifications, quality assuring institutions of further and higher education and training, validating educational programmes and making awards to learners. Functions include the development of a Code of Practice and International Education Mark for institutions enrolling international learners
